INÜ researchers Sebastian Dörner and Sebastian Cammerer, together with Bell Labs researcher Jakob Hoydis, presented the world's first wireless over-the-air communication system solely based on neural networks at the Bell Labs/Nokia 5G Smart Campus Event in Nozay/Paris, France.

The system can learn to communicate across wireless channels, with a conceptually appealing "all-in-one" design, challenging the classic engineering approach of block-based signal processing. While the system is not targeted at outperforming conventional systems, its conceptual simplicity is convincing and promises further progress toward universal transceivers that can operate reliably over an unprecentedly wide range of communication channels.
